Young people launch groundbreaking Safe Havens app for Worthing

Young people in Worthing have launched a pioneering safety app designed to help children and teenagers find trusted places when they feel vulnerable or unsafe.

The Safe Havens app gives users instant access to a growing network of businesses and community organisations offering safe and welcoming spaces across the town.

The initiative was developed by students from Davison CE High School for Girls and St Andrew’s CE High School, who have worked alongside Cllr Carl Walker and local partners since 2024.

The project began after students identified personal safety in and around Worthing as one of the biggest concerns facing young people.

Rather than simply raising the issue, they set out to create a practical solution combining technology, community support and youth leadership.

Users of the app can locate nearby Safe Haven venues through an interactive map, check which locations are open and access immediate help when they feel at risk.

It also includes an SOS feature which can help emergency services locate a child or young person in distress.

More than 40 businesses and community organisations have already joined the network. Participating venues display Safe Haven signs in their windows and have received training to support young people who need assistance.

The Worthing scheme is believed to be one of the first Safe Havens initiatives of its kind in the UK to have been conceived, designed and led by young people.

Students have been involved throughout the project, including designing its branding, approaching local businesses, producing awareness materials, creating training content and shaping the app’s digital experience.

Cllr Carl Walker said: “Too often, young people are told that they are the leaders of tomorrow. This project proves they can be the leaders of today, addressing the issues that really matter to them. The Safe Havens app is an outstanding example of what can happen when young people are empowered to identify challenges and create solutions.

“What these students have achieved is genuinely innovative. They have created not just a network of safe spaces, but a digital platform that connects young people directly to support when they need it most. Their vision, determination and commitment to making Worthing safer for others has been inspiring from day one.

The project has received funding from the Worthing Community Chest and support from the UK Safer Business Network, which has helped ensure participating organisations are trained to provide effective assistance.

Those behind the scheme hope its launch will demonstrate the power of youth leadership and inspire similar Safe Havens projects in other parts of the country.

The Safe Havens app is now available through Google Play.
