Lewes District Council has launched a public consultation over proposals to install a calisthenics facility at East Saltdean Undercliff.
The proposed gym could feature climbing apparatus, pull-up and parallel bars, and other equipment designed for bodyweight and strength exercises.
The council says it wants the facility to be accessible and suitable for people of different ages and fitness levels.
Councillor Laurence O’Connor, who represents East Saltdean and Telscombe Cliffs, said the gym could provide an accessible, free-to-use facility promoting health and wellbeing.
He said the undercliff was a unique coastal space and that any investment should reflect what local people wanted to see there.
The outdoor gym proposal follows the council’s decision not to proceed with plans for a skatepark at the site.
An earlier public survey found that more than half of those responding opposed the skatepark scheme.
Concerns raised included safety, the future maintenance of the facility and the presence of an existing skatepark at The Oval in Saltdean.
Alongside the outdoor gym, the council is considering installing a biodiversity planter at the base of the cliff.
It could provide additional separation from possible chalk falls while creating habitat for plants, insects and other wildlife.
The undercliff lies beneath the Brighton to Newhaven Cliffs Site of Special Scientific Interest, which is nationally protected for its geology, rare plants and wildlife.
The proposals remain at the consultation stage, and a detailed final layout has not yet been published.
People can give their views through Lewes District Council’s consultation, which closes on 14 September 2026.
