More than 100 faulty electric blankets were taken out of use during safety checks carried out by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service last autumn.
The fire service tested 334 electric blankets during its annual testing sessions and found 102 were unsafe.
Officials are now encouraging residents to get older electric blankets checked as bookings open for this year’s free testing programme.
West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service says defective electric blankets can pose a serious fire risk.
Regular testing is recommended for blankets more than two years old to make sure they remain safe to use, while blankets over ten years old should be replaced.
Residents can book an appointment for the free checks by calling 0345 872 9719.
Testing sessions will take place across West Sussex between 29 September and 21 October, with venues in Tangmere, Bognor Regis, Worthing, Horsham, Lancing, East Grinstead, Broadbridge Heath, Storrington and Haywards Heath.
The programme begins at Sage House in Tangmere on Tuesday, 29 September.
Further sessions will be held at Bognor Fire Station on 30 September and 1 October, Durrington Community Centre in Worthing on 5 and 6 October and Horsham Library on 7 October.
Testing will then continue at Lancing Parish Hall on 8 October, the Age UK Glen Vue Centre in East Grinstead on 13 October, the Bridge Leisure Centre in Broadbridge Heath on 14 October and Chanctonbury Leisure Centre in Storrington on 15 October.
The final two sessions are due to take place at Haywards Heath Fire Station on 20 and 21 October.
West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service’s Safe and Well Manager Samantha Barber said: “We are really pleased to be offering free electric blanket testing again this year.
“Last year we tested 334 blankets and found 102 to be unsafe, posing a significant fire risk.
“We would encourage residents to get their blankets checked. It’s a simple step that can provide reassurance and help keep you and your home safe. Our friendly team will be on hand to help and answer any questions.”
The sessions will also be attended by Prevention Assessment Team nurses and representatives from the Sussex Fraud Team and Neighbourhood Watch, while the Citizens Advice Energy Team will attend some events to offer advice on heating homes and improving energy efficiency.
