Plans have been submitted to replace cladding at the Portsmouth Marriott Hotel to comply with fire safety regulations.

The application seeks permission to remove and replace the existing composite cassette cladding panel system on the hotel in Southampton Road, Cosham.

The hotel, which is north of Portsmouth city centre and northeast of Port Solent, provides accommodation for around 160 guests.

Planning documents state that the building’s elevations are currently clad in brick, curtain walling and composite cladding panels.

The proposal would see the existing folded composite cladding panels on the main hotel accommodation block replaced with new powder-coated aluminium flat cassette cladding panels.

According to the Design and Access Statement, the new design “will not only simplify the current design, but also bring it in line with the fire barrier manufacturer’s standard and tested details”.

It adds that the overall appearance of the hotel would remain largely unchanged, with the size and distribution of the cladding panels retained.

The current light metallic bronze panels would be replaced with an anodic golden beach finish, while the existing dark grey semi-gloss panels would be replaced with an anodic steel blue grey finish. Planning documents state the colours have been selected to closely match the existing façade.

The statement says: “The proposed removal and replacement of existing composite cladding system at Marriott Hotel Portsmouth provide a unique opportunity to refresh the aesthetic of the building. The new cladding systems will provide better performing facade that meets the current fire regulations.”

The application also states that all new external wall materials will achieve a minimum Reaction to Fire Classification of A2-s1,d0.

All other external wall finishes on the bedroom accommodation block and adjoining hotel buildings would remain unchanged under the proposals.
