Work is getting underway today (13/04/2026) to make St Paul’s Road in Chichester safer for pedestrians and cyclists, with a series of improvements planned to enhance accessibility and visibility along the route.
The scheme includes the installation of new tactile paving to support people with visual impairments, as well as resurfacing work in several locations. Kerb lines will be reinstated, bollards installed, and existing road markings refreshed once construction is complete. New school warning signs featuring timed flashing amber lights will also be introduced.
As part of the project, vegetation will be cleared to improve sight lines for both pedestrians and drivers, particularly at key crossing points. The work aims to make crossings safer and more accessible for all users, including schoolchildren and those with mobility or visual impairments.
The improvements are also intended to enhance the overall walking and wheeling environment, encouraging more people to choose active travel by creating a more comfortable and clearly defined route.
To help residents plan ahead, advance warning signs will be placed in the area before work begins. Construction will take place between 9.30am and 3pm, Monday to Friday. Carrying out the work during daytime hours is expected to minimise disruption overnight, while also providing a safer environment for both workers and the public and supporting better quality control.
Temporary multi-way traffic signals will be in operation at various stages of the project to allow the work to be carried out safely. There are no plans for road closures or diversion routes, and emergency services will have access at all times.
As with all highway schemes, progress may be affected by adverse weather conditions, and any changes to the schedule will be communicated as early as possible.
