Police Constable Christian Field, 50, who is based on the Brighton and Hove division, has been charged with assault by beating.
Sussex Police said the alleged incident was reported to its Professional Standards Department in December 2025.
An investigation was carried out and a file was subsequently submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service.
The CPS later authorised a charge of common assault.
PC Field was placed on restricted duties following the allegation and remains subject to those restrictions.
He is due to appear at Reading Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 10 June.
Sussex Police has not released further details about the nature of the training exercise or the alleged injuries involved.
The charge is an allegation and the case has not yet been determined by a court.
