People across West Sussex, East Sussex and Hampshire are being urged to take extra care, with disruption continuing for schools, travel and public services.

A number of schools are closed again today because of the heat. Parents and carers can find the latest links for school closures in West Sussex, East Sussex and Hampshire

Anyone travelling today is being advised to only make journeys if they really need to. There were a number of crashes and breakdowns on local roads yesterday, while train services are also being affected, with reduced timetables operating on parts of the network.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is warning people to take extra care in the countryside and when planning to cool off in open water.

The hot and dry conditions mean there is an increased risk of wildfires, while rivers, lakes and the sea can still be dangerously cold, even during very hot weather.

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said: “If you’re looking to cool off in open water during the hot weather, please respect the water and think twice before jumping in.

“Make sure you choose a spot with a lifeguard and look out for rip currents if you’re swimming in the sea.

“Do not enter the water while under the influence of alcohol. Always make sure there is someone on the shore with a mobile phone who can look out for you and call for help if needed.

“Even on a hot day the water can be cold, so make sure you enter slowly to allow your body temperature to adjust. If you notice signs of cold water shock, stay calm and float on your back.

“The hot and dry conditions also increase the risk of wildfires. If you are heading to the countryside, pack a picnic instead of a barbecue.

“Don’t discard cigarettes or leave litter, especially glass bottles, on the ground.

“If you spot a wildfire, move to a place of safety and call 999.”

The weather today will stay very hot and mostly sunny across West Sussex, East Sussex and Hampshire, with the red warning for extreme heat remaining in place until midnight.

West Sussex will see long sunny spells, with highs around 33°C in places such as Chichester and Worthing. It will remain warm overnight, with temperatures only falling to around 20°C.

East Sussex will also be hot and sunny, with temperatures reaching around 33°C in places such as Eastbourne, while inland areas are likely to feel hotter.

Hampshire is expected to see some of the highest temperatures, with sunny spells and highs of around 36°C to 37°C in some inland areas.

People are being advised to drink plenty of water, stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day, and check on vulnerable neighbours, friends and relatives.
