New technology is helping a Worthing leisure centre cut water use, reduce waste and protect the environment.

Splashpoint Leisure Centre in Brighton Road has installed a pool water recovery system, which captures and filters backwashed water while it is still warm before returning it safely to the pool.

The system is expected to save more than 7,100 litres of water a day, which adds up to around 2,591,500 litres a year.

The leisure centre secured £40,000 of funding for the scheme through Southern Water’s Business Partnership Fund. The fund supports local businesses and organisations with innovative projects designed to save water and reduce bills.

Backwashing is a routine part of maintaining swimming pool water quality, but it can use large amounts of water. Splashpoint’s new system captures water used during that process, treats it, and reuses it rather than sending it straight to waste.

Because the recovered water is still warm, the system also helps reduce the energy needed to heat replacement water.

Mark Byerley, Operations Director at South Downs Leisure, which operates Splashpoint, said the project forms part of its wider work to improve the environmental performance of its centres.

He added: “We’re extremely grateful for the support from Southern Water’s Business Partnership Fund, which has helped make this important investment possible.

“Leisure centres naturally use significant amounts of water every day, particularly in swimming pool operations, so finding smarter ways to reduce consumption is a real priority for us.

The new pool water recovery system at Splashpoint will save thousands of litres of water every week, reduce waste and help us work towards our wider sustainability goals.”

Southern Water says saving water is becoming increasingly important, with population growth, climate change and low rainfall putting pressure on supplies in the South East.

Southern Water’s Water Efficiency Manager Kayleigh Sharman said: “It’s great to see schemes like this in action, saving resources in our water-stressed region. Since it was launched in 2023, our Business Partnership Fund has supported around 20 projects in schools, garden centres and leisure centres, saving more than 50 megalitres of water – the equivalent of 20 Olympic swimming pools. We’re currently open for a new round and are excited to see how much more can be saved.”
