West Sussex residents are being encouraged to consider whether they, or someone they know, may be at greater risk of a fire at home and could benefit from a free safety visit.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service carries out around 5,000 Safe and Well Visits every year, helping people reduce the risk of fires and remain safe in their homes.

The visits are completely free, along with any smoke alarms or specialist smoke detection equipment fitted by fire service staff.

Safe and Well Visits are available to anyone who may be at increased risk of experiencing a fire or who could have difficulty escaping during an emergency.

Risk factors can include living alone, having a disability or impairment, smoking inside the home, using medical equipment because of a health condition, or hoarding possessions.

During a visit, trained staff offer practical advice about preventing fires, including the importance of maintaining working smoke alarms, cooking safely and charging electronic devices correctly.

They can also help residents create an escape plan so they know how to leave their property safely if a fire breaks out.

The visits cover wider health and wellbeing issues which could affect a person’s safety at home, including smoking, alcohol consumption, diet, exercise and the use of emollient creams.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s Safe and Well Manager Samantha Barber said: “A fire can have a devastating impact on people’s lives, but many fires can be prevented through simple safety measures and advice.

“Our Safe and Well Visits are tailored to the needs of each household and provide valuable guidance to help people stay safe in their homes.

“I would encourage anyone who feels they could benefit, or who has a friend or family member who may be at greater risk, to get in touch to request a free visit.

“We would ask that you have a discussion with the person you are referring beforehand to ensure they are happy for us to come and visit them.”

Residents can find out more or request a Safe and Well Visit through the West Sussex County Council website at www.westsussex.gov.uk/safeandwellvisit.
