Extreme heat warning issued across the South

An extreme heat warning is now in place across the South, with temperatures expected to reach up to 36 Celsius over the coming days.

The Met Office warning remains in force until at least Thursday evening, with people across Sussex, Hampshire and the wider South being urged to take precautions.

Forecasters say the heat could have widespread impacts on health, travel and local services. The warning means adverse health effects may be felt across the population, not only among those most vulnerable to extreme heat, with a risk of serious illness or danger to life.

People are being advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the strongest sun, and avoid exercise between 11am and 3pm. Curtains should be closed in rooms facing the sun, while anyone going outside should take water, stay in the shade, wear sunscreen and use a wide-brimmed hat.

There are also warnings over water safety, with significantly more people expected to visit beaches, lakes and rivers. Anyone entering the water should do so gradually to reduce the risk of cold-water shock, use lifeguarded beaches or supervised swimming areas where possible, and float on their back if they get into difficulty.

Travel disruption is also possible, with delays on roads, road closures, and cancellations or delays to rail and air travel. Passengers are advised to check before travelling, carry water, wear light-coloured clothing, and look out for others who may be struggling.

There is also a high risk of heat-sensitive equipment failing, which could lead to power cuts or disruption to essential services, including water, electricity, gas and mobile phone networks.

People are being encouraged to check on older neighbours, those with underlying health conditions, and people living alone.

Anyone worried about their health, or the health of someone else, should contact NHS 111.
