Plans to display 20 flags throughout Chichester city centre have been submitted to the district council.

If the application is approved, the flags will be flown to mark the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Pallant House Gallery extension, in North Pallant.

The gallery is a registered charity operated as a not-for-profit company by the Chichester BID Ltd.

Pallant House opened as a gallery of modern art in 1982 but by the 1990s it was clear that more space was needed.

The incentive to expand came when the gallery was offered an extensive collection of Modern British art by Professor Sir Colin St John Wilson – the architect of the British Library – and his wife, the architect MJ Long.

Planning permission for the new gallery was granted in 2002 and the site opened in July 2006, less than one year before Sir Colin’s death. It won the Royal Institute of British Architects Award in 2007.
