South East Coast Ambulance Service has launched a new charity appeal, challenging local communities to see if they can ‘Outrun An Ambulance’.
The campaign invites people across Kent, Surrey and Sussex to cover the same mileage travelled by a SECAmb ambulance during a 12-hour shift.
Money raised will support SECAmb Charity’s work helping ambulance crews, patients and communities across the Trust.
The challenge is designed to be open to all ages and abilities. Participants do not need to complete the mileage in one go and can take part individually or as a team, with each person covering part of the distance.
People can choose how they want to take part, including walking, running, cycling, swimming, scooting, paddling, or using anything self-propelled.
“Because you don’t have to complete the distance in one go, you can set your own timeframe. You might aim to achieve your target within one month, or even three,” said Vicky Rees, Head of Charity.
The challenge has been split into local areas across the SECAmb region, based on the miles covered by ambulance crews. Options include 63 miles at Chertsey in Surrey, 74 miles at Brighton in Sussex, or 107 miles at Ashford in Kent.
“We want to have enough people contribute their distances so that we beat 936 miles, which is the combined total of ambulances from 11 sites across the SECAmb patch,” said Vicky. “It’s a Trust-wide challenge that we tackle together.”
The campaign launched at the weekend, when Interim Chief Executive Jen Allan led a team of SECAmb cyclists on a 55-mile ride across the Trust’s region, including Box Hill.
“We wanted to do something to raise awareness of the SECAmb Charity. Hopefully, it will inspire people to take on their own challenges and show their support for the work our crews do every day in their communities,” said Jen.
The team has raised almost £1,000 so far and contributed 440 miles.
“Now we need others to get involved,” added Jen. “Can you go the extra mile by taking on and conquering the Outrun An Ambulance challenge this year? Every mile counts!”
