Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth has declared a critical incident after several vital chiller units stopped working during the heatwave.

The issue began yesterday and has affected a number of key areas across the hospital site.

Hospital officials say the extreme heat has had an impact on digital systems, as well as theatres, scanning facilities and laboratories.

Engineers are working to fix the fault and restore the affected systems as quickly as possible.

The hospital remains under pressure as staff manage the impact of the disruption while continuing to care for patients.

A critical incident is usually declared when a hospital is facing significant pressure or disruption, and additional steps are needed to manage services safely.

The failure of the chiller units comes during an ongoing spell of hot and humid weather across the South, which has already led to warnings about health risks, travel disruption and pressure on essential services.

Patients with appointments at Queen Alexandra Hospital are being advised to follow any official guidance from the hospital or NHS services.

The disruption is understood to be affecting areas which rely on temperature-controlled systems, including operating theatres, scanning equipment and laboratory facilities.

Engineers remain on site as work continues to resolve the problem.

Hospital teams are expected to prioritise urgent and emergency care while the situation is managed.

People who need urgent medical help should continue to use NHS 111 online or call 111, unless it is a life-threatening emergency, in which case they should call 999.

Mark Orchard, Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Financial Officer, Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, said:

"We would like to reassure our patients and communities that despite the current challenges, essential and emergency services remain available for anyone who needs them.   “The unprecedented pressures created by the current heatwave, combined with the failure of a number of our chiller units, have led to significant disruption across several of our services. Our teams are working hard to repair the affected equipment, restore systems safely and ensure we continue to provide safe care for our patients.”
