Residents have warned that a proposed block of 32 flats could worsen “overcrowding” and parking problems as plans go out to consultation.
The scheme, on brownfield land off Station Lane in Chandler’s Ford, is open for public feedback until July 17, with a drop-in event on Monday, July 6.
Sarah Smith, 43, who has lived nearby for 16 years, said the development would be “absolutely not appropriate for the area” and fears existing issues will be made worse.
She said parking is already a long-standing problem, with cars regularly lining the road and even stopping on double yellow lines near neighbouring facilities.
Sarah said: “We know houses need to be built, and affordable housing is really important, but something of this scale is completely out of character.”
The scale of the plans and the potential increase in traffic are major concerns that she and her neighbours share.
Sarah said: “The infrastructure is not there to support the sheer volume of people and extra traffic, especially when there is already overcrowding.
“As residents, we want answers. How is this not going to create a larger problem than what already exists?”
Eastleigh Borough Council said the consultation and upcoming drop-in session are opportunities for people to have their questions answered.
A spokesperson said: “We know issues such as traffic, parking, and local infrastructure are important to residents, and these will all be carefully considered alongside feedback from the consultation and the technical assessments that support any future planning application.
“We want to hear as many views as possible before the proposals are finalised.”
The plans, put forward by the local authority, would see 32 apartments built on the site, which is set to become vacant following the relocation of Centrestage Productions Youth Theatre.
The homes are expected to be entirely affordable, including a mix of 16 one-bedroom and 16 two-bedroom flats.
Early proposals also include new landscaping, improved walking and cycling links, and parking.
Feedback from the consultation will help shape a planning application due to be submitted later this year.
If approved, the scheme could be considered by councillors in late 2026 or early 2027, with construction starting soon after and homes completed around 2028.
The drop-in event will be held at Centrestage Productions Youth Theatre, Station Lane, from 3pm to 6.45pm on Monday, July 6.
The council said that the project’s architect, planning consultant, proposed construction partner, and council officers will be in attendance.
