People across the South are being urged to check in on vulnerable neighbours, friends and relatives as the region faces its third spell of hot weather so far this year.
A yellow heat-health alert is in place for the South East until Saturday lunchtime, with temperatures expected to rise through the week. The alert means the hot weather could have an impact on older people, those with existing health conditions, young children and anyone who may struggle to keep cool.
Forecasters say the South is set for a largely settled and very warm spell, with temperatures climbing as the week goes on. Some inland areas could reach the low thirties, while coastal towns are expected to feel slightly cooler, although still warm and humid at times.
Today, parts of Sussex and Hampshire could see highs of around 28 Celsius, with temperatures building towards the end of the week. Inland areas, including parts of West Sussex and Hampshire, may see highs of around 30 to 32 Celsius by Friday and Saturday. Coastal areas are likely to stay a few degrees lower, but warm conditions are still expected.
Health officials are reminding people to drink plenty of water, avoid too much alcohol, keep curtains or blinds closed during the hottest part of the day, and try to stay out of direct sun between 11am and 3pm.
People are also being asked to check on older relatives, vulnerable neighbours and anyone living alone, particularly if they do not have easy access to shade, fans or cool rooms.
Anyone heading to the coast, rivers or lakes is being urged to take care around water. Cold water shock can still happen even during hot weather.
The warm spell is expected to continue into the weekend, with Saturday likely to be one of the hottest days of the week before conditions gradually become a little fresher.
